Frequently Asked Questions

The Ewgis Research Institute aims to address socioeconomic disparities in access to scientific research opportunities, and it reflects Girls in STEM's commitment to advancing excellence in STEM fields while encouraging close collaboration between professionals and student researchers. In 2021, 127 students have been awarded scholarships to conduct faculty-mentored research. They also receive one-on-one mentoring from professors, postdoctoral researchers, or PhD candidates who are familiar with the student's research area. During the program, participants will meet with their mentor at least four times, or once per week. Participants will unite with their mentor on a research project and write a formal scientific research paper.

In addition to scholarships and mentorship, ERI provides access to training and opportunities to develop skills, as well as workshops, panel discussions, social events, and other activities. The summer comes to a close with the Closing Conference Session, where students present their research progress. At the end of the program, students are awarded an Ewgis Scholar certificate. Their papers will be reviewed and considered for publication in the Ewgis Annual Journal.

The end result is an intensive interdisciplinary community of high school students committed to scientific excellence, as well as a summer of innovative study at the highest level.
